Richmond, Barnard Castle & Mainsgill Farm Shop – 26th October [26-10-2019]

from/per person £16.00
  • Harrogate

Set on a high rock above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III.

With fantastic views over the Tees Gorge this fortress sits on the fringe of an attractive working market town also known as ‘Barney’ so there is plenty to do for families on a day out. Try and spot Richard’s boar emblem carved above a window in the inner ward or visit the ‘sensory garden’ of scented plants and tactile objects.

Markets are held throughout the year both indoors in the Market Hall and outside in the in the cobled Market Place. Markets and Fairs have always been of vital importance to the economy of the Town.

The Saturday Market is held at the top of the Market Place around the Obelisk. This market is popular with both visitors and locals alike. A huge variety of foodstuffs and goods are available and include fresh fish, meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables, flowers etc.

Markets were initially held to help broaden access to a wider variety of goods than were currently available under the Merchant Guilds which were based in towns and cities. They provided an outlet for local producers to sell on their goods and produce – the first ever “retail outlets”. They continue to flourish and form an integral part of the town’s economy.

Whether it’s a quick pit-stop during your travels, a hearty home-cooked family meal, or even a weekly shop; Mainsgill is sure to have something for every member of the family to enjoy.

Selling their own traditionally home reared meats, Mainsgill Farm Shop North Yorkshire is a ‘real’ farmshop offering a shop floor to our livestock farm.

Opened in 2001 by Andrew & Maria Henshaw, the family-run business has grown over the years from a small farmshop & tearoom with rising popularity. The latest expansion was completed late 2014 with 10,000 sq foot dedicated to retail over two floors, and the family now farm 500 acres with livestock & crops.
